I was born in 1951, which means that I was a teenager during the 60’s. What a time that was. I went to high school from 1966 to 1970. Vietnam was going on during those days. Some of the older kids I went to high school were over there. Such a tumultuous time. I remember that OSU campus was shut down because of riots and protests. People were protesting all sorts of things back then. Not only protests of Vietnam but I remember the Black Panther movement. There were sit ins and marches and people with bullhorns taking over buildings in protest. You could not go anywhere that there wasn’t something going on. People were on the streets handing out flyers in protest. It really got bad when students were shot on the campus of Kent State, that was from the military coming in because of protests there. It did get out of hand, the response I mean. Such a time. We were young, there was all kinds of stuff people were talking about. But it wasn’t enough to just talk about it, there was action taken by those that felt strongly enough to bring their cause to light. It did get the attention of a nation. I think we were protesting everything. Just the idea that we had the right to question everything and not trust the establishment was empowering. As young people, we stood up for what we believed in. We used our feet and our voices and took a stand. My oh my, how things seem to have changed today.
I know that we have had protests today like the BLM movement and such. These are protest in response to wrongs that have been committed. It doesn’t feel like it’s the same thing. Our protests were a questioning of government policies during Vietnam and any established authority acting aside from their true responsibilities. That was what we were questioning, we were holding their feet to the fire so to speak. Today, it just seems like people are looking for a chance to perpetrate chaos in order to destroy society. We were trying to change the establishment, not destroy it. I would like to think that there are those of us who still want to hold the establishments feet to the fire and make changes, not destroy everything.
Unless you have been hiding under a rock, I am sure you see all kinds of things our government is doing that need to change. Our freedoms are at risk of being taken away and replaced by government control through economic control. I am not so sure that the measures being taken to pressure everyone to be vaccinated are not a means to condition everyone to obey the voice of our government. Instead of mandating our compliance, I would like to see an open and honest discussion by all the medical specialists as well as honest and factual truth as to what is going on. Unfortunately, we cannot trust the media, we cannot trust the political empowered specialists and we cannot trust the government agencies that are working to mute the truth, especially the research coming from other countries. Instead, I feel like the message is, “do what we say or else”. If this was the 60’s, there would be all kinds of hell being raised right now. Instead, we have such a roar of side issues and distractions to keep everyone off base long enough to get some steam going by the government to push through their objectives without letting everyone hear the discussion and have the opportunity to speak. Instead, we are told to not speak, and in some cases, people are shouted down for speaking or banned from the public forum of media.
I am 69 now. My mind is protesting but my body doesn’t have its youthful vigor anymore. So, what can the “boomers” do to get back to the days when we stood up and protested and questioned authority? I am sure that there are enough of us left that we could start to get the “establishment” to listen to what we want. Or maybe, there aren’t enough of us left to get the job done now. Sometimes I shudder to think that in ten years every 11-year-old will be voting. Maybe that’s what wrong now. Or maybe, we have just grown soft and sit on our couches and pretend that someone else can take up the fight. I am sure we will cheer them on. Or maybe, the day is coming when we will have to again, take a stand and show our government that we have the right to question them and make them answer for what they are doing. I for one am getting pretty fed up with what’s happening and I want to let everyone know that I do not accept what is going on as good for our country and I do not believe that the current direction of things is good for our country and I want to see changes in the way we vote and I want to see changes in our congress and senate and I want to see a change of leadership in our presidency. And so, I am making my voice heard, I am protesting today, and maybe tomorrow, I might have to gather at the courthouse and take my bullhorn and speak a little louder if necessary, after all, you can’t trust Facebook to get your message out.
